This clip shows the final moments of the Antre Kanzo “Ceremony to enter the djèvo initiation chamber.” The candidates for initiation dance with the initiates and are gently blindfolded by them. As it is the end of the Rada rite, everybody is dressed in white. However, as the candidates for initiation prepare to enter the djèvo, the Petwo rite begins with the characteristic cracking of whips and the brandishing of the red and black “bull-horned” Petwo rum bottle. Special thanks to Ongan Michelet Alisma who kindly invited me to this ceremony. This work was generously funded by the UF-Duke NEH Collaborative Grant.
